This rebutia, named after the cactus researcher A. F. H. Buining, was found by Walter Rausch in Argentina, in the Jujuy department near Iruya, at an altitude of 2700 m.
The approximately 3 cm large flowers are orange-pink, usually several flowers appear at the same time.
