After the genus Notocactus was dissolved in 1997 and integrated into the genus Parodia, this cactus is now actually called Parodia mammulosa.
The wide, flat central spines on the glossy dark green body are striking.
The lemon-yellow flowers with the dark red pistil reach 4cm in diameter and only open in the afternoon.
