This plant, described by Curt Backeberg in 1936, occurs in the Chilean region of Coquimbo. He gave her the species name senilis because of the long, white thorns that look like an old man's beard.
The tulip-shaped flowers typical of neoporterias are bright pink with a light throat.
In 1994 it was classified by Fred Kattermann in the genus Eriosyce, but it can still be found under its old name in many collections.
