Melocactus neryi occurs in Venezuela, in the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Roraima, and in Suriname. The name honors the former governor of the Brazilian state of Amazonas, Mr. Nery. It was first described in 1901 by the German botanist Karl Moritz Schumann.
Like all melocacti, M. neryi initially grows unspectacularly. Only when its vegetative growth has ended (approx. 10 cm in diameter) does the cephalium form in the apex, from which the small, pink flowers appear.
Melocacti must be kept warmer than other cacti also during the rest period. The temperature should not fall below 15 ° C.
