The home of this in 1963 described ball cactus is located in the Peruvian Amazon region.
The body has a rough, velvety surface with few, stingy spines that fall off easily or missing altogether.
The flowers are slightly actinomorphic, 8 to 10 cm long and reach a diameter of 5 cm.
They appear individually or several times at a time several times a year.
While Matucana madisoniorum has red flowers, these are white in the variety "albiflora"!
