Matucana paucicostata was described by Friedrich Ritter in 1963. It occurs in the Peruvian region of Ancash at altitudes between 1800 and 2800 meters.
It grows spherically, becoming cylindrical when older and forming shoots at the base.
The slightly curved flowers, up to 6 cm long and 3 cm in diameter, often appear in bunches.
