This cactus is found in the Mexican states of Guanajuato, Hidalgo and Querétaro.
The shoots reach diameters of 1 to 3 cm and are several cm long.
The yellow peripheral spines are characteristic of Mammillaria elongata, the echinaria variety also has brown central spines.
The flowers are only about 1.5 cm in size, yellow-green and appear early in spring.
Over time, attractive cushions form as a result of budding.
