This cactus occurs in the Mexican states of San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato and Querétaro.
Previously, it was classified in the genus "Dolichothele".
Since 1997 it is listed as a variety of Mammillaria decipiens.
Characteristic are the up to 3cm long, light yellow, curved, bristle-like thorns.
That is why it is also called bird's nest cactus.
The flowers are relatively small, white with a greenish median strip.
