The genus Gymnocalycium is native to South America.
You can find them in Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina, as well as in the south of Brazil.
Gymnocalycium horridispinum comes from the Argentine province of Córdoba and grows there in the grasslands at an altitude of about 1000 m.
The species name "horridispinum" (= frightening thorns) indicates the unusually long thorns for Gymnocalycium.
While most gymnocalycia develop white flowers, G. horridispinum shows pink flowers with a diameter of up to 6.5 cm.
