This cactus, originally called Echinocereus pectinatus var. Rubispinus, collected by Alfred B. Lau in the Mexican Department of Chihuahua and labeled with the number L088, should not be missing in any collection. The adjoining spines (= pectinate) are red in the new shoot and only later turn gray-brown. The up to 9cm large flowers are purple-pink to purple-red with a white throat.
